I / Set the course
Every campaign begins with consequential choices.
Choose who you will lead, decide which rivals will share the stars, and shape the rules of the galaxy before the first turn begins.

Compare twelve playable civilizations, each with its own identity, traits, combat advantages, and strategic starting bonuses.
Create your campaign
Select opponents, galaxy size, difficulty, logistics, battle control, starfield, and the optional Scourge threat before launching a new game.

Explore contested space, establish defensible borders, and develop the worlds that will supply your population, research, industry, and fleets.

Advance planetary development, weapons, defenses, propulsion, leaders, ship classes, and specialized structures through a broad research tree.
Build a command tradition
Recruit admirals with distinct personalities, strengths, drawbacks, costs, and career progression to lead your most important fleets.
Know every ship in service
Review the status, location, hull, armor, fuel, experience, technology, and orders of every active, mothballed, or lost vessel.
Organize operational fleets
Assemble ships into task forces, assign roles, monitor readiness, and coordinate tanker support and fleet-level orders.

Ascendancy changes the rules of the galaxy.
When one civilization becomes too powerful, the remaining empires may set aside old rivalries and unite against a common galactic threat.

The Galactic Council identifies an ascendant threat and can bind surviving civilizations into a permanent coalition for the galaxy's final struggle.
